Our departmental and institutional values are such that we openly denounce and take a stand against displays of ignorant intolerance, hate, or bigotry. They are hurtful to experience and can have a deep and threatening impact on many in this country, including our colleagues and patients. The demonstrations of intolerance that we have all witnessed are meant to incite fear and to cause divide. I (Brandon) am a proud multiracial child of an immigrant parent and grandparents who came to America on asylum to work as farm-hands my family and my experience with explicit and implicit forms of racism has motivated me to pursue a path dedicated to the service of those in need and to act as a voice against hate and bigotry. I (Daphne) am the child of two Holocaust survivors who lost their entire families to the evils of the Nazis and, as such, I have made it central to my life to impart values of inclusion, openness, and mutual-respect. We reflected on how expressions of rancor and acrimony have affected each of us personally and how they might affect our colleagues and patients. Wanda McClain, MPA, Vice President, Community Health and Health Equity, Co-chair Brigham Health Social Justice and Equity Task Forceīrandon and I found ourselves conversing this weekend about how sad we feel about the general tenor of discourse in our country today. I will continue, as a leader dedicated to promoting health equity, to work with others at BWH to ensure we live out our mission and values within the Brigham and within our communities. We must be unequivocal in speaking out against hate and commit ourselves to living up to the ideals that have made this country a beacon of hope and opportunity for many. Our fathers, mothers, brothers and sisters have suffered, fought and died to advance and protect these values. The values and aspirations of our country are equality, liberty and the protection of basic human rights. Bigotry, racism, discrimination, anti-Semitism, sexism and bias against immigrants and members of the LGBTQ community are an affront to our humanity-we must not tolerate them. Hate, in all its ugly forms, is wrong-we must speak out against it. This is not values-neutral for me as an African-American woman. Betsy Nabel, MD, President, Brigham HealthĪs the vice president for Community Health and Health Equity and as a co-chair of the Brigham Health Social Justice and Equity Task Force, I am firmly committed to standing on the side of what is morally right. Together, we must continue to follow our moral compass and work in unity to deliver on our precious mission for the benefit of our patients, their families, and one another. While no one can predict the future, I suspect we will continue to be challenged by events happening in the world around us. Racism, hatred and intolerance have no place at the Brigham. Brigham and Women’s Hospital will continue to be a safe, welcoming place for all who come through our doors. I want to be very clear that we will not allow anyone or anything to affect who we are – our mission, vision or values – or what we stand for. I have the privilege of leading an organization that is guided by its moral compass. It is what grounds us, particularly in challenging times. To me, a moral compass is an internalized set of values that guide us ethically – in the decisions we make and in how we conduct ourselves – every day. As events unfolded across our great nation in recent months, I’ve found myself thinking a lot about the concept of a moral compass.

11/3/2022 0 Comments Gone home sam lockerDressed in a brown plaid shirt dusty, scuffed cowboy boots and a belt buckle the size of a go-kart steering wheel-the world’s most affable cowboy, basically-he’s deep into a dissertation about his refurbished laptop. The retired QB hardly pays any attention. The flapping W marks the only visible suggestion across these 25 acres-no signed helmets, no framed jerseys-that the owner once played football for a living. The front porch is framed by two flags: the Stars and Stripes and a much smaller purple homage to Locker’s alma mater, Washington. The gate to their property is open, leading to the house, with its wooden beams and rustic charm, a swing set, outdoor fireplace and a pasture stocked with chickens and cows. The Lockers live a bit north of Ferndale, up where tractors are as prevalent as cars. While all six of the other quarterbacks taken in the first four rounds of the 2011 draft prepared for the ’15 season, Locker remodeled his grandmother’s home, then moved in. Locker grew up here, became a star here and returned here when he retired from the NFL in March 2015, at 26. The Bishops drove to see the Lockers one Sunday last fall, a straight shot 98 miles north from the Seattle suburbs to Ferndale, an enclave of 13,000 in the northwest corner of the state. And if I want to spend an afternoon at his house during the football season, he would love it if I brought my wife, Lisa, and our newborn son, Blake. If he’s to participate in any story, he says, he wants Jesus to be the main character. I worry that he might have just bared his soul to an audience of one. And yet when he departs that afternoon with a bro hug, he says he’s still not sure he wants to fully cooperate. He talks for most of the next two hours, answering every question. I want to know: 1) why he retired, 2) what he’s doing now and 3) whether he ever loved football. “I didn’t need to,” he says, “ ’cause it was my decision, my life. No one cares as he starts by saying that he never felt compelled to explain his choice in detail. None of them notice Locker, who’s digging into a chicken-and-rice bowl lathered in his favorite sauce. But questions about his exit persist for one simple reason: In this century, no other healthy and reasonably effective NFL quarterback has chosen to step away as quickly as Locker.Īround us, mothers push children in strollers, and two men in Seahawks jerseys scarf burritos. He remains wary of how a story about him might be framed he worries that his words could be twisted to suggest that he retired because he hated football or that he was worried about his health or that he’d had an epiphany watching Concussion. Locker agreed to meet, but not exactly to a formal interview. He introduces himself, insists on paying for lunch, gets really excited about Chipotle’s new topping (“I love queso!” he all but yells) and settles at a table outside, maneuvering a large umbrella for shade. So on a Monday three months after our first correspondence, Locker strides into the Bellis Fair Mall in Bellingham, Wash., and extends a meaty right hand. Now he wants to meet at a restaurant where nobody stays longer than 20 minutes and he’s still not sure if he wants to tell his story, to reveal how he went from first-round draft pick in 2011 to retiree in four seasons. Locker, 29, walked away from the NFL three years ago, issuing a statement that he lacked a “burning desire” to play, then vanishing from public view. It takes a year of unanswered pitches, a half-dozen unreturned text messages, a voice mail and two calls, but eventually Jake Locker sends some GPS coordinates. This article appears in the April 23 issue of Sports Illustrated. 11/3/2022 0 Comments Rand al thorBut also, keep in mind that your character likely won't be Rand Al'Thor. But arguably one of his biggest concerns that’ll plague him is the threat of insanity that all male channelers have to face at one point or another. I'd probably run a 5 Fighter/15 Sorc split, myself - I don't think Rand is really that book smart, 16 in charisma makes a heck of a lot more sense than 16 int, to me, and his powers aren't learned, they're inherent powers he learns to harness. Through these new villains, Rand will have plenty to be concerned with as the Dragon Reborn, regardless of how powerful he'll become. There’s also the matter of the 13 Forsaken and all the Darkfriends that help them. His immediate future in seasons 1 and 2 could include meetings with Min (Kae Alexander) and Elayne (Ceara Coveney), who are set to be two of his three major love interests, with the third being Aviendha (not Egwene). Rand al thor series#As it was written in the prophecy, most of what Rand did was a setup for his final showdown with the Dark One in an event called the Last Battle.Ĭonsidering that Jordan’s Wheel of Time series consists of 14 massive books, there’s so many stories that the show has to offer for Rand in the seasons to come. Later, Rand found ways to co-exist with Lews Therin and gradually took down the Forsaken, a group of 13 immortal channelers that serve the Dark One. Adding to his problems was the original Dragon, who surfaced as a voice in Rand’s head. As the story progressed, Rand developed into a capable leader and an incredibly powerful channeler of the One Power. Declaring himself the Dragon Reborn to the world drew the attention of various groups and armies, with some ultimately pledging loyalty to him. As a person capable of saving (and destroying) the world, Rand was targeted by the forces of the Dark One as well as the Aes Sedai, with many of them trying to stop or control him. Over the course of Wheel of Time’s story, Rand took steps to fulfill his destiny, and had to contend with those on both sides of the battle with the Dark One. Thanks to clues and other information gathered by Moiraine, she and Lan have narrowed down their search for the Dragon Reborn to four 20-year-olds: Perrin Aybara, Mat Cauthon, Egwene al’Vere, and Rand al’Thor in Wheel of Time's first episode. According to the prophecy, Lews Therin’s eventual rebirth is the key to saving the world from the Dark One when he strikes again. The Dragon Reborn is the reincarnation of the all-powerful Lews Therin, a fallen hero who saved humanity from the Dark One, only to later go insane and cause the Breaking of the World. Similar to the story laid out in Robert Jordan’s Wheel of Time books, the show revealed that Moraine and Lan’s mission is to find and protect the Dragon Reborn. Rand finding the heron-mark sword and an apparent feat of strength from the character were among the episodes’ most interesting moments. In the beginning of the series, Rand is one of the five villagers drawn into the Dragon Reborn mystery by Moiraine (Rosamund Pike) and Lan (Daniel Henney). Wheel of Time’s first three episodes opened up a number of questions about Josha Stradowski’s Rand al’Thor. 11/3/2022 0 Comments Mascot geo duckHand model is Emily Dunn-Wilder of the Evergreen Shellfish Club.
11/3/2022 0 Comments Opera miniOpera Mini’s bottom bar offers the standard forward, back, search (you can also use the address bar to search, as normal), tab manager, and minimal settings menu. Presumably, it’s here that Opera Mini’s football focus appears, but don’t worry-the whole news feed area can be switched off in settings, leaving you with an editable standard selection of your most frequently-used websites. News sources are mixed in with ads and it’s hard to tell which is which. You can edit this in settings, but no matter what you choose, the news feed looks cluttered and spammy. There is a default selection of news sources that is presumably selected by an algorithm. Obviously, you can edit Opera Mini’s settings to make it appear exactly as you want, but the default homescreen is a bit of a mess. This keeps the reduced space of the mobile interface clean and clear and is greatly appreciated. OPERA MINI FULLEven the settings appear more basic than other browsers-only a subsection of frequently-used options pop up when you hit the cog icon and you have to go into another menu to see the full variety of options. The app that opens is also very intuitive and seems more simple than competitors-navigation options appear in the bottom bar here and are fewer than on other browsers. The installation process is fast and simple. It’s a long-standing, but less popular, browser on desktop, so how does it do when using it on the go? Prior to the ban in the early 1900s, absinthe was ubiquitous. But why is thujone so dangerous that its presence in your glass of booze needs to be regulated by the FDA? The answer has more to do with history than science. Absinthe contains thujone, a chemical found in several edible plants - including tarragon, sage, and wormwood. In the U.S., absinthe alcohol is regulated by the Food and Drug Administration, and the reason it was banned for so long has to do with one particular ingredient. The first two give absinthe its characteristic licorice taste, while wormwood imparts a bitter flavor and is the source of absinthe’s famed mystique and jade-green hue. So what is absinthe, and why was it once deemed so dangerous that people weren't even allowed to buy it? Absinthe is a grain alcohol of Swiss origin that is made by macerating herbs and spices, the most important of which are fennel, anise, and wormwood. Today, you can easily get your hands on a bottle of the liqueur, but before you do, it's worth learning a bit more about it. and much of Europe until relatively recently, and the "green fairy" still carries with it an air of mystery. The alcohol - which was hugely popular in the late 19th century - was banned in the U.S. The Green Hour may have passed but the joy of that fabled drink absinthe has not - it’s back with a vengeance. There are few beverages as intriguing as absinthe. To recapture the very essence and glory of a warm summer evening on a Parisian boulevard and achieve some kind of communion with L’ Heure Verte is very much part of the attraction. Interestingly, there is a small market for vintage, pre-1915 absinthe and this is attractive to both to the absinthe connoisseur who admires the distinctive aged profile of the spirit, and to the romantic. The party stopped suddenly in 1915 as the liquid of social alchemy was banned. Quite a transformation, but then transformation was always at the very heart of the Green Fairy. As the Green Fairy moved through society, she moved from being the triumphal toast of colonial militarism to the source of social disorder. In any case, the censorious moralist was outraged and that was half the fun - the Green Fairy, the very epitome of the modern woman!Ībsinthe was therefore shocking as well as dangerous, as it threatened the status quo. Hilariously, it has been reported that the ladies would take the absinthe drink neat due to their “inherent weakness” and susceptibility to the wicked liquor, and also because too much water might bloat them and course their corsets to burst! Whether it was the menfolk who paid or whether the “weaker” sex was allowed to buy absinthe is unclear. Absinthe drinking was also not confined to the men folk but crossed the gender barrier with ease, prompting the anti-absinthe zealot, Henri Balesta, to comment about that it was man’s weakness for the emerald liquid that caused the creation of that most shocking of sights: “the absinthesuse”, the female version of the absinthe drinker “the absintheur”. One can easily imagine how the evening might start with one absinthe drink in dignified elegance and descend into the riot of cocottes (tarts) and arts in hip Montmartre.Ībsinthe, The Green Fairy, was never content to remain in an exclusive gilded milieu she moved through society like a fever. The absinthe hour of the Boulevards begins vaguely at half-past-five and ends just as vaguely at half-past seven: but on the hill it never ends. Whilst the Green Hour was a time for chic and polite Parisians to drink a small absinthe aperitif along the imposing boulevards, the practice also spread to the more risqué area of Montmartre, the haunt of artist and poets. I know a very distinguished musician who started at the Café Neapolitan and finished up the Gare du Nord. He takes his first drink at one café, his second somewhere else, and his tenth or twelfth at a tenth or twelfth other cafe. Although it was considered impolite to drink more than one absinthe, the rule was easily circumvented by what we call today “bar hopping”.Įrnest Downson’s friend Robert Sherard tells it how it is: This was a bourgeois practice considered rather smart due to absinthe’s popularity amongst the colonial military. The Green Hour began as a thoroughly middle class affair in France. But during the Belle Epoque, the most popular time to indulge was the Green Hour (L’Heure Verte or L’Heure Absinthe) - the time starting at five o’clock when the French took absinthe as their favourite aperitif.Ībsinthe, the magical drink of the green hour, whose jade flower blossomed on every terreace. The absinthe drink is a very versatile beverage it can be drunk the traditional way (louched with water), in cocktails, as an aperitif or served as the featured drink of a hip party. 11/2/2022 0 Comments Screen snapshot iphoneIf you want to view your screenshots, simply open the Photos app, head into Album tab, then the Screenshot album in the list, you can view all the iPhone screenshots. The first level calls for the development of diagnostic biomarkers via the standard population-based (nomothetic) approach with an emphasis on diverse sampling. To increase the clinical relevance of pain neuroimaging models, a three-fold biopsychosocial approach to neuroimaging biomarker development is recommended. The biopsychosocial approach to pain management situates a person's pain within the diverse socioeconomic environments they live in. However, the clinical impact of pain neuroimaging models has been limited by inadequate population sampling – young healthy college students are not representative of chronic pain patients. Neuroimaging allows us to identify these component processes and model how they combine to instantiate the pain experience. Pain is a complex, multidimensional experience that emerges from interactions among sensory, affective, and cognitive processes in the brain. #Ancora pain management how to#The relationships are complex, suggesting that a multifaceted approach is needed to ensure that managers are adequately informed on how to manage and accommodate employees with musculoskeletal pain to reduce sickness absence. Managers’ knowledge and behaviors in relation to employees’ pain were associated with employees’ future musculoskeletal pain and sickness absence. We found several key associations between the knowledge and behaviors measures and pain-related sickness absence (interactions). The employees of managers with higher scores on pain-management were more likely to report low back pain (β = 0.57 95%CI ). The employees of managers with higher scores on knowledge of pain-entitlements reported fewer days of pain-related sickness absence (β = -0.62 95%CI ). We identified four types of managers’ knowledge and behaviors: 1) Pain-prevention (actions for prevention of employee pain), 2) Pain-management (actions to assist employees manage pain), 3) Pain-entitlements (communicating entitlements to employees with pain), and 4) Pain-accommodations (ability to facilitate workplace accommodations for employees with pain). We investigated associations using mixed-effects regression models. Eldercare employees reported pain-related sickness absence, and number of days with musculoskeletal pain repeatedly over 1 year. Managers’ self-reported knowledge and behaviors in relation to employees’ pain were grouped using Principal Components Analysis. The prospective study included 535 eldercare employees, and 42 managers from 20 nursing homes. We investigated the association between managers’ knowledge and behaviours in relation to employees’ pain and their future risk of musculoskeletal pain and associated sickness absence. Managers’ knowledge and behaviors in addressing musculoskeletal pain and sickness absence is not well understood. 11/2/2022 0 Comments Joel and clementine(To be fair, Joel says he's "OK" with that in the last spoken line of the movie.) If you buy this interpretation, then they have met in Montauk multiple times before the events of the movie, and so their subconscious draws them there even if they don't know why. Joel then decided he wanted to also remove Clementine from his memory. He was boring and she wasn’t happy and wanted to move on. Everything changed when Clementine woke up one day and just decided to have Joel erased from her memory. Viewed from this perspective, the ending is quite fatalistic: it seems to imply that people are trapped in destructive patterns in their lives, and that there's not a way to escape them. Joel Barish and Clementine Kruczynski were a couple in love. Some people have interpreted this scene to mean that Joel and Clem have actually met multiple times before, and have erased each other from their memories more than just the one time we see in the movie. #Joel and clementine movieHowever, there's another possible interpretation (which is why I put "first" in quotes above.) The final shot of the movie is a repeated shot of Joel and Clem playing in the snow at Montauk. However, one does have to accept Joel's memory as accurate for this to work we only ever see their "first" meeting as part of Joel's memory, rather than in "real life". If you accept this as true, then it makes sense that this location would have a special subconscious significance for both of them, and that they would be drawn to the same beach even after having erased their memories. So the simplest answer is that their first meeting, when Joel's friends invite him to a beach party and Clementine is there, is in Montauk. Note that Clementine's hairstyle is the same in the pre-credits scene as it is at the end of the movie: a blue color that's grown out substantially. While it's not immediately clear on a first viewing, the pre-credits scene occurs chronologically after the majority of the scenes in the movie Joel and Clem have already had their breakup, and have both erased each other from their own (conscious) memories. This has been a long held belief but recent data suggests there is a much less chance of cross-reactivity than previously thought. Based on these data and our previous clinical experience, there appears to be little/no potential cross reactivity between meropenem and.
